ROMA BARNES

Roma began her life in Demblin, Poland, a small town in just east of Krakow, in 1930.  She was dearly loved by her parents, brother, and her extended family.  She lost her parents and brother during a roundup of Jews in the town square on May 6, 1942. She survived the war in slave labor camps and was liberated by the Russians on Jan. 16, 1945. After several years in Europe, she and her family eventually settled in Tiburon in 1965.

Because she needed a higher level of care than what her family could give her at her home, Roma moved into the Jewish Home in 2016, where she lived for over four years. Indeed, making the transition from her Tiburon home to the Jewish Home, was challenging for Roma as it is for many Resident. It was the extraordinary staff who helped with her transition and made the Jewish Home a true new home for Rona. Like for all of the residents, they engendered a sense of safety and inspired confidence. Within a short time, Roma was enjoying many interests, including going to synagogue services, classes with the Rabbi, listening to the musical entertainment, winning at bingo, and celebrating the Jewish holiday gatherings and cultural festivals. Though Roma had lived through a terrible experience in her younger years, she remained a positive, vibrant, loving and giving person up until her death in 2020. May her memory be for a blessing.
